About this journal

The full story, in our own words

A 140-day devotional journal for new believers laying the first foundations of the faith — a daily place to reflect, write, and pray one honest page at a time.

For New Believers — Foundations of the Faith. Each day sits beside a quoted line from a Christian writer across the centuries — kept in their own voice, with a quiet word-gloss underneath so the older language opens rather than closes.

  • A daily page for the new believer who is still finding where the books of the Bible begin.
  • Five honest minutes a day — no memorized verses required to start.
  • For the new believer who is laying the first foundations of the faith.

Seven stages across 140 days: Stage 1 — Something New from God · Stage 2 — Letting Go into His Hands · Stage 3 — Following Where God Leads · Stage 4 — The Turn · Stage 5 — Getting Closer to God — Quietly · Stage 6 — Caring for Others in His Name · Stage 7 — The Shape of At Home with Him.

Each of the seven stages carries a single quiet image — the dawn, open hands, a lamp, a mountain, a vine, a stream, an open door. Simple pictures, recognised before they are explained.

Inside these pages you will also find:

  • Seven things on every day's page — an Opening line. A Reflect question. A Rest cue for the body. A Today's Focus. A Touch line. A quoted Scripture or Christian writer with a word-gloss. A closing Meditation. The same seven elements, every day, for 140 days.
  • Older language, opened in real timethy becomes your. Thee becomes you. Every classic line — Scripture in older translation, devotional prose from earlier centuries — carries a small plain-English gloss directly underneath. Nothing is left for the reader to puzzle out.
  • Real names, never anonymous — every quoted line is attributed — drawn from a curated corpus of Christian writers across the centuries and chosen to fit each journal's shape. The voices are named, the sources are known, and the corpus is wider than any single tradition.
  • Liturgical interludes between stages — between the seven sections, the journal slows. A Commentary. A Poem. A Prayer for This Season. A closing Reflection. Real rhythm — not page numbers.
  • Borrowed prayers, and yours — selected prayers from saints and faithful authors carry you forward, while A Prayer for This Season pages hold space for the words that are only yours to write.
  • One poem per section — short, unhurried passages between stages — small enough to memorise, deep enough to keep returning to.

Sample prompt: "What is one thing you learned about God this week that you did not know when you first believed?"

Not a devotional to read when inspired. A daily practice to return to regardless.

You know that warmth that comes in church on Sunday — and the way it starts thinning out somewhere between the car park and Monday morning's first email? Underneath is a quieter question — whether what felt real on Sunday is the same God who is with you on Tuesday at 3pm. This journal sits with that quieter question. Five honest minutes a day. The faith you met in church begins to settle into the rest of your week, gently, without performance, the way Monday slowly stops feeling like a different country.

Five honest minutes a day, with no verses you are expected to already know. Written for new believers standing at the very beginning, where every page is allowed to be your first. Open to day one.

What’s inside every day

The same daily rhythm on every page: opening line, reflect question, rest cue for the body, today's focus, touch line, attributed quote with gloss, and a closing meditation.
Older Scripture and classic prose come with a small plain-English gloss directly underneath — thee, thou, unto — opened, not assumed.
Every devotional line is attributed, drawn from a curated corpus of trusted Christian voices across the centuries.
Between each of the seven stages, a Commentary, a Poem, an A Prayer for This Season page, and a closing Reflection.

Same daily rhythm, 140 days. One steady shape you learn once.

How it will feel

Let the jaw be still. The prayers that feel awkward today will feel natural in six months. Give it time. The church that does not fit yet — the right one is out there. Keep looking. God has not changed His mind about receiving you. He never will. The old patterns you are trying to change — you are not trying alone. He is in the change.

You pray without rehearsing the words first. The noise in your head sorts itself before you get out of bed. Your shoulders sit lower than they used to. You stop pretending you are doing fine. You ask the question and stay for the answer. It is the kind of change that is small enough to miss, and large enough to feel.

Built to form you — not just inspire you

Not Inspiration — Formation

This is not a devotional to read when inspired — it is a daily practice to return to regardless. Real faith is built through structured daily formation, not occasional motivation. Finishing this journal produces something that starting ten others cannot.

What This Journal Returns You To

  • What relationship in your life is changing, because you are changing?
  • What did you believe about God before that you are questioning now?
  • What is the ninety days revealing about who you are becoming?

Sample prompt: "Sit with the question: what is this season preparing me for?"

A thoughtful gift

Some gifts arrive loud. This one arrives steady. 140 days of quiet companionship, plain-English Scripture, and small honest pages — a present that keeps showing up after the wrapping is gone. What if everything you thought about God was not quite right, and this is where you find out? The questions you brought to God are in good hands. Keep bringing them.

About this journal’s author

Hayley Louisa Mark is the pen name under which Stilling Waves Press writes its reflective journals. The voice is quiet on purpose: these pages draw on Scripture and the older contemplative writers — Andrew Murray, François Fénelon, Thomas à Kempis — slowly read and set into a 140-day daily practice. Sixty-six journals share the same method: five honest minutes a day, one season at a time.

Published by Stilling Waves Press, creator of the 140-Day Reflective Devotional Series. Our journals are designed to be completed, not merely read — combining Scripture, reflection, and guided writing into a daily spiritual practice.
