About this journal

The full story, in our own words

A 140-day devotional journal for the Christian man who wants character forged in Christ — a daily place to reflect, write, and pray, not just another thing to get through.

  • A daily page for the man who leads at work and at home and still needs somewhere to be led himself.
  • Five honest minutes a day — a simple devotional and Bible study you can do before the house wakes.
  • For the Christian man who wants strength and character forged in Christ, not just gutted out alone.

Seven stages across 140 days: Stage 1 — God Opens the Day — Beginning · Stage 2 — Letting Go Without Force · Stage 3 — The Turn · Stage 4 — Kept Going by God · Stage 5 — Closer to Him — Quietly · Stage 6 — Sent Out by Him · Stage 7 — The Walk Continues.

Inside these pages you will also find:

  • Seven daily elements, every pageOpening, Reflect, Rest, Today's Focus, Touch, a quoted Scripture or Christian writer with a plain-English gloss, and a closing Meditation — one steady rhythm you learn once and return to for 140 days.
  • Voices of trusted Christian writers, named and attributed — every quoted line carries its source — classic devotional and contemplative writers across the centuries — drawn from a curated corpus and selected to fit each journal's particular shape. No anonymous quotations.
  • Every older line opened underneath — Scripture in the King James Version and classic Christian prose come with a plain-English word gloss directly under each quote — thy, thee, unto, communion — nothing stays out of reach.
  • Real interludes between each sectionCommentary, Poem, A Prayer for This Season, and a closing Reflection sit between each of the seven sections — full devotional rhythm, not just dividers.
  • Written prayers from great writers — and space for your own — selected prayers from saints and faithful authors carry you forward, with A Prayer for This Season pages for your own words to come.
  • A poem for every section — short, unhurried passages that carry the stage's feeling without preaching — small enough to remember, deep enough to return to.

Sample prompt: "Where in your week do you feel strong in front of everyone and completely spent when the door finally closes?"

Most devotionals give you a paragraph and move on. This one gives you seven steady elements every day — opening, reflection, rest, focus, touch, attributed quote, meditation — for 140 days.

You know the quiet that settles in on the drive home, after the meeting and the inbox and the number that would not move, when the radio is off and it is just you and the weight. Underneath the steady face you keep for everyone is a question you rarely say out loud: whether you are strong enough, whether there is enough, whether the man your son and the people you love are watching is the man you wanted to be. This journal gives you a different five minutes a day. The pages do not lecture and they do not tell you to push the weight down and carry on. They sit with you the way an older man you trusted would, if he had more time and asked for nothing back. You set the weight down for a moment, you hear something true, and you carry it back into the work. No one has to know you came here. Sometimes that is the whole point.

Five honest minutes a day. Before the demands of the day get their hands on you. Written for the working man who wants to grow steady in Christ. Open to day one.

What’s inside every day

The same daily rhythm on every page: opening line, reflect question, rest cue for the body, today's focus, touch line, attributed quote with gloss, and a closing meditation.
Older Scripture and classic prose come with a small plain-English gloss directly underneath — thee, thou, unto — opened, not assumed.
Every devotional line is attributed, drawn from a curated corpus of trusted Christian voices across the centuries.
Between each of the seven stages, a Commentary, a Poem, an A Prayer for This Season page, and a closing Reflection.

Same daily rhythm, 140 days. One steady shape you learn once.

How it will feel

You are not the foundation of your house. He is. Let your shoulders down for a moment and remember it. Sleep. The man who never rests is not strong; he is just running out of road quietly. You can be tired and still be strong. Fatigue is not failure. Even the strongest men were told to rest. The bill, the deadline, the number that keeps you up — release the grip for tonight. He does not sleep so you can.

Your back is straight when you walk in. You ask for help before you collapse. Your hands open while you are reading. You walk into the day knowing what matters. You stand without bracing. Nothing dramatic. A hundred and forty days of showing up.

Built to form you — not just inspire you

Not Inspiration — Formation

This is not a devotional to read when inspired — it is a daily practice to return to regardless. Real faith is built through structured daily formation, not occasional motivation. Finishing this journal produces something that starting ten others cannot.

What This Journal Returns You To

  • What would gentle strength look like in the hardest room you enter this week?
  • Who taught you what a man is supposed to be?
  • When did you last let another man see the part of you that is not handling it?

Sample prompt: "Where did integrity cost you something this week — and was it worth it before God?"

A thoughtful gift

Some gifts arrive loud. This one arrives steady. 140 days of quiet companionship, plain-English Scripture, and small honest pages — a present that keeps showing up after the wrapping is gone. You do not have to prove anything on this page. The proving is not what this is for. Real strength showed up with God in a way the office will never measure. Carry it out.

About this journal’s author

Hayley Louisa Mark is the pen name under which Stilling Waves Press writes its reflective journals. The voice is quiet on purpose: these pages draw on Scripture and the older contemplative writers — Andrew Murray, François Fénelon, Thomas à Kempis — slowly read and set into a 140-day daily practice. Sixty-six journals share the same method: five honest minutes a day, one season at a time.

Published by Stilling Waves Press, creator of the 140-Day Reflective Devotional Series. Our journals are designed to be completed, not merely read — combining Scripture, reflection, and guided writing into a daily spiritual practice.
